Wednesday, September 11th 2024 was a very and I mean very, very bright and sunny day on the farm. In all reality, there wasn’t anything really worth celebrating about, for this was the 23rd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center that occurred on Tuesday September 11th 2001. I’m not sure who put the picture of the Twin Towers on the door of the store however whomever did it, thanks, especially for the reminder of us never forgetting. The attacks on September 11th should have been fresh on the minds of everyone in the area and the Lehigh Valley wasn’t immune to the effects of the September 11th attacks.
Back to farm business, I went for what I knew, and that was collecting the manure and putting the manure into the spreader. I took a brisk walk around the farm with the wheelbarrow searching for stuff to clean up. I also raked the hay in the barn and piled it up to make sure no hay would be wasted and that a clear path would be visible in the barn. I also checked to ensure that the tubs in the horse stalls had water in them so the horses would have water to drink to avoid dehydration.
Sue explained to me about an interesting yet necessary task and that was the packaging and delivery of milk to a food pantry Bethlehem. We loaded the milk into the crates, loaded the crates into the truck, and I rode with Sue so she could show me how the delivery process works, as well as using a most direct route into the city. We delivered the milk, Sue collected the invoice, and we drove back to the farm.
During the afternoon, I assisted Laura in the dairy house helping her bottle the milk. Laura showed me how it works: machine running, the milk running through the hose into the half-gallon container jugs (have to bring the jug up to the hose), label the jugs, cap the jugs, put the jugs into the crates, putting the half-gallon milk jugs into the refrigerator. I actually found this task to be really fun and the best part was that this was done in ice cold air conditioning.
Lastly, I was told to watch the store for a while and take orders if anyone wanted anything. I knew how to run the cash register however I didn’t know how to work the card machine so Sue showed me an app to download and hopefully in the future I take orders via the card machine and the app. No one came to the store but earlier in the day someone purchased goat milk.
Friday September 13th 2024 was a really quiet day on the farm. The day was very uneventful and I did my usual chores on the far. Sue and Kathy gave me a challenge and that was to cut the branches and overgrown branches from the trees, as well as help get the cabin ready because campers were scheduled to come over the weekend to camp out. It was then I learned that the farm has a set of woods that are unmatched.
